SC&I held its second annual Mingle on Wednesday, Dec. 14 to promote networking between current students andalt alumni.

Over 180 students, alumni, and faculty went to the Mingle hosted by Hester Coan, Ph.D., assistant director of Student Services for Career Services and co-sponsored by all SC&I student organizations and the SC&I Alumni Association.

The Mingle event earned its name because students “mingle” with SC&I alumni. The event helps students gain necessary networking skills and enables alumni to meet students while reminding them of their time at SC&I.

Students handed out mock business cards with their major and year of graduation to alumni in order to foster conversation and connections. Approximately two-thirds of attendees were students and one-third was alumni.

“My goal is to keep growing it every year,” said Coan regarding the success of the event. “The Mingle is excellent networking practice for students and has the potential to be a class reunion for alumni.”

Beyond practicing networking, some students and alumni made lasting connections. “We had a few alumni who came looking for interns and said they met some really good prospects,” Coan said.

The event was held in the SC&I lobby, room 212, and the student lounge and featured many activities, including a photographer taking professional headshots for LinkedIn and a raffle offering great prizes, including a Samsung Galaxy tablet, which a student won. Everyone in attendance received SC&I gifts and gourmet food was served by local upscale caterer Food Architects.

During this spring, 2017 semester, SC&I Student Services offers the SC&I-wide Career Expo which will be in partnership with University Career Services on Monday, March 20. This event will be held in the College Avenue Student Center Multipurpose Room from 6-9pm.  The Expo will feature dozens of company representatives looking to network with students for internships and jobs in every SC&I major and graduate program.

Hester Coan, Ph.D., is the assistant director of Student Services for Career Services at SC&I and works with students to help them identify their dream career paths and move forward every day in the direction of their passions.
